Currently and a few days of RAOK

It's time for the December Currently with Farley over at Oh Boy 4th Grade!!  I love reading what everyone else is doing this month.  It's just too funny that Farley has a RAOK on this months currently.  Saturday night my daughter and I decided we would complete 25 random acts of kindness this month, and then I hopped on to blog about it and saw Farley's December Currently.

We started Saturday night by heading to Dairy Queen for a half time treat during the K-State game and purchased the order for the people behind us.  Katie was just beaming....she said, "Mom, this is awesome!"  On Sunday we put this goodie bag on the neighbors garage door so they would see it when they arrived home from church.

Monday we are leaving a this for our mailman,

and on Tuesday we are leaving these in the teachers lounge for all the wonderful people at my amazing school!

Wednesday we are leaving a Pizza Hut gift card on the porch of a single mother with 4 children who is struggling a bit.

I can't wait to read what everyone else is doing!!!

My sweet little girlie has been home sick for the past couple of days....she even missed trick-or-treating on Halloween because of her fever.  She is curled up on the sofa next to me watching Phineas and Ferb while I catch up on my favorite blogs.

I absolutely love reading everyone's thankful posts on Facebook during the month of November.  It helps to remind me of all the things I am so lucky to be thankful for every single day.

I don't play a lot of music in my room....mostly because I forget about it until it's time to move on to another task and then I missed the perfect music moment.  One thing we do every morning though is listen to a Disney song on my iPad.  I play it as every one arrives in the morning.  The students have until the song is over to unpack their backpacks, put their snacks in their desks, turn in their homework, and get truckin' on their morning work.  I love this new addition this year.....it works like a dream and I never have to get after them for wasting time in the morning!  The added bonus is watching them mouth the words and dance a little as they are moving through the room!

Tell me something good

I'm in need of a little positive today so I decided to link up with Jennifer at Rowdy in First for her Tell Me Something Good linky!

My Something Good From School: My students are really doing well with the Whole Brain Teaching techniques I've been using.  They LOVE when they get a smiley face, and I always here a "Uhhh" when they get a frowny face.  It's amazing how quickly their little head turn towards me when I say "Class!"  We are also doing really well on Read to Self.....up to 20 minutes.  I even had time to visit with 5 people in each of my three classes about what they are reading.  We introduced Word Work yesterday and today we are doing a super D-duper fun writing project....more on that tomorrow!

My Something Good From Home: My daughter has her first night of dance for the season tonight and a volleyball game on Sunday! I absolutely love watching my kiddos participate in their favorite sports.  I can hardly wait until basketball season!!

Currently

I can't even begin to express how thankful I am for the 3 day weekend we had!!  I really needed a little time to catch up at home and at school.  It's the third week of school and I finally feel like I'm ready to take on the this year!  To celebrate I'm hooking up the fabulous Farley at Oh Boy 4th Grade for her September Currently!

A little more about my favs:

1. If you know me you know that I MUST start my mornings off with a big ol' honkin' cup of coffee.  My Dad once said I really drink creamer with a little coffee....he may have a point there!  I love my  Coffee Mate Fat Free Vanilla Creamer.....it's not pretty if I have to start the morning off without either one!

2. Most of the teachers in our building received iPads last year, and I'm in love with that thing.  I use it daily for the weather and to play some Disney songs I downloaded over the summer.  I start the song when the kiddos arrive and they have until the song is over to get unpacked, put their snack in their desk, and get to working on their morning work. I can't tell you how amazingly well this method has worked so far, not to mention the fact that they are humming and singing and bouncing along while they unpack :)  I am really looking forward to incorporating my iPad more during my reading lessons in the next couple of weeks!

3. Yes, I love my son's new car.  I love it for completely selfish reasons like: he picks up his sister from school which means I can  stay and work until 5 without interruptions, he can drive himself to open gym and bring himself home at 10 pm, he can run out on a whim and buy the ingredients to make apple and grape pie....yep, that's what he did last night!  The pie was amazing, and that new car is coming in pretty handy for all of us!!!

You know it's Back to School when....

Okay, that second one really only applies to those people who live in a college town....if you do, you know exactly what I'm talking about!!!

Oh my goodness is my room looking cute.  It's finally coming along and I can't wait to show you all tomorrow!!  Tonight is Open House and tomorrow is the first day of school.....I'm extremely nervous and super duper excited!!!  Since I had such a short amount of time to get my room ready there will be little things I need to finish and tweak for about the next month or so, but I think I'm finally ready to welcome my new little peeps!

10 things I learned and a Currently

Every Saturday I post about the top 10 things I've learned in the past week.  I decided that since it's August and school officially starts for me on the 16th, (unless, fingers crossed, our building renovation is done sooner and we can get in and start working on our rooms) I would change it up a bit and do a top 10 things I will miss about summer.  We have had an amazing summer and I want to soak up every last second of it that I can.  I also want to appreciate all the lazy and relaxing days I've had. They will make me a better teacher, mother, friend, sister, daughter, and colleague during the upcoming school year.  I'm also linking up with Farley at Oh' Boy 4th Grade for a fun August Currently!!

10. Crafting!
I love crafting and love having the time to do it.  I've been able to redo the master bedroom, mulch the massive flowerbeds in the backyard, create some spring/summer things for the front porch, rework a step stool, make a funky little wall hanging for the deck, and touch up all the paint in the house.  I've also squeezed in a little time each week to create a bunch of new things for my classroom!!

9. Cooking! 
Summer allows me the time to scan recipes on Pinterest, following cooking blogs, and browse through cookbooks.  I have done a serious amount of cooking this summer and have loved every second of it.  We are eating so much better than we do during the school year.  I really don't want to let this one go, so to help with the big job of planning and prepping healthy meals after a full day of work, I created a menu for the month of August, and made 5 slow cooker freezer meals to keep on hand for really busy nights.  I'm planning to make a September menu next week before school starts and then over winter break I will make another 5 freezer meals.....fingers crossed this works!

8. Organizing! 
Yep, I'm an organizational freak!  Nothing makes me happier than a neatly labeled pantry or a stack of bins and drawer organizers.  I just love everything in it's place and neatly organized.  I had time this summer to organize every closet in the house, the craft room and craft cabinet, the shed, and the garage.  I even made homemade laundry soap (love it and saves a ton of money), and hand cream ( I made some back in December and it just ran out in July....this stuff is amazing!).

7. Sunning and swimming. 
My daughter and I are sun and water worshipers.  We both love summer and all the sunshine it brings.  A day at the pool is just about our favorite thing to do.....I'm fairly certain I get this from my mom....she is another sun and water worshiper!  We spent many days at the pool, and 5 whole days boating and sunning at the lake with family.....I will definitely miss the sun and water!!

6. Lunch with my friends.
My fellow teachers you can completely understand this one.  The 30 minutes we get for lunch just isn't enough to really enjoy.  Most of the time we are making phone calls, setting up for an activity, and finishing a little photocopying all while snarfing down a cold sandwich....not really a break :(   This summer I have had time to meet friends for coffee about once a week, and enjoy lunch with my colleagues every Tuesday.  That's one of my favorite things about my school....we are so much like a family that we get together for lunch once a week all summer long....I'll sure miss that!

5. Grocery shopping on a weekday morning. 
I've mentioned this one like 100 times, but I adore doing my grocery shopping on weekday mornings when no one else is at the store.....sure beats the 5 p.m. craziness on a weeknight (sometimes complete with a snow storm).

4. Reading.
Oh how I love to read!  I will definitely not abandon this one during the school year, but it will have to be scaled back, and much of it will revolve around books my students will be reading for novel studies.....of course I do love that kind of reading too!

3. Athletic shorts, t-shirts, and flip flops.....also known as my summer uniform. 
I love clothes and I do love dressing up, but there is something to be said about knowing that a pair of athletic shorts, a t-shirt, and flip flops are all you need for the day!

2. My slow and easy mornings! 
Charlie always wakes me at 6:30 a.m., but that's okay....it just means I get more morning to enjoy.  We go for a walk, then I have coffee at the computer and check up on blogs, emails, and Pinterest.  I then make some breakfast and eat it in the sunshine on the deck.  I follow up with some Words with Friends with my mom and Sister and then finally shower and get ready for the day.  Yesterday we had to be at the Dr. for Jake's sports physical by 9:30 a.m......we barely made it......yes, re entry into the crazy school mornings is going to be hard for all of us!


1. Game Night....every night with my little peeps! 
I will miss this the very most.  We end each night with a card game of Murder, Farkle, Sorry, Monopoly, whatever.....it is just the best!!  We laugh, talk and just act silly. All that family time is so wonderful!!!!  I will miss it so much when we go back to our crazy, insane, busy school schedule!

Wow, sorry that was so long!!  If you managed to make it through that without falling asleep here is my Currently!

Fabulous Finds Friday!

It's Friday!!!  Not sure why I'm so excited about that.....when you're a teacher, and it's summer, every day is Friday!  I think I'm excited because I have made a TON of new stuff for my classroom this week that I can't wait to share, and I'm linking up with Elizabeth at Fun in Room 4B for her Fabulous Find Friday.  Who doesn't like a fabulous find or a great deal? In the past two years, I have been pretty stingy with my money when it comes to purchasing for the classroom.  Most of the bulletin board trim, furniture, resoureces, etc. that I have came from other teachers.  I try not to spend too much on my students because I always feel guilty that I should be spending it on my own peeps.  Well this year our school is undergoing a major renovation.....so major in fact that all of our belongings are packed up and in a storage facility in another town!  Let's not even talk about my panic over when the place will be done and when we can get in.....no instead, let's focus on my new classroom goodies!

I've never had a theme in my classroom, and this year I didn't want a cute theme that I would tire of quickly so I went with a color theme.  I chose blue, black, orange, and lime green.  My students desks are black (and with 25-27 of them that's a color you can't ignore), their chairs are blue (again.....lots of it), and I collect Garfield (orange), and well, the green just seemed to go and livened up the whole pallet.  This year I broke down and purchased boarders and letters to match my color theme.  I cannot wait to get into my room and make all of my bulletin boards match....... color coordinating makes me so happy!

I scored big time at Dollar Tree and the Target Dollar spot this week!  Look at this loot!!!  Update: Oops, I think I've been a little misleading.....I need to clarify that the borders and letters came from Trend and MPM School Supplies, not Dollar Tree.....although that would've been nice.  Sorry for the confusion!

The cute little owl, the pencils, the stamp ink, beach ball, and fun little conversation bubble dry erase board came from the Target Dollar Spot!  The composition notebooks were $0.50 each!  I plan to put a quote of the day on the conversation bubble, use the owl to hold my whistle and playground bag,

put the pencils in a Welcome Back bag for the students on the first day of school,

use the ink pads for my Stampin' it Word Work activity ( I used it last year and got the idea from Tara over at 4th Grade Frolics.....the kids loved is so much that I'm out of ink!), and use the beach ball for a reading response activity!

The candy, eraser tips and mini small magnetic dry erase boards came from Dollar Tree.  The white boards will be used with the magnetic letters I purchased as a Word Work activity (more on that next week).

The ribbon is going in the students reading notebooks as bookmarks, and the clear pouches were $0.97 and will hold the magnetic letters and mini dry erase boards.  Off to take my son for a sports physical and enroll both of my little peeps in school.  After a bout of insomnia last night I'm hoping to have the energy toput together my Welcome Back bags and and create an activity for Work on Writing that came to me during the hours of sleeplessness!

If you don't think you can handle the cuteness don't read any further :)  This post is nothing but cute and adorable!

Last night we had a little family game night and poor ol' Charlie was feeling left out.  Without thumbs and all it's just not possible for him to play cards with us.  And, since he has those sad droopy eyes, and those big floppy ears he just looks miserable staring at you while your laugh and joke at the human table.  Well, Jake couldn't take anymore of the pathetic stares.....

could this dog be any more spoiled?!?!

I also created another cute addition for my classroom.  Just look at it's absolute adorableness....

The bin came from Dollar Tree, the wooden cutout from Hobby Lobby (it was $3, but at half price....$1.50), and I made the label.

I don't know why I never thought of this idea (originally from The Two Sisters at The Daily Cafe).  My students are always bringing me books that have seen a little too much love.  I set them aside in a pile and forget about them.  This basket is genius......the kids won't have to bother me when they find a book in need of repair, and I can just grab the basket on my way out the door each Friday and do the necessary repairs over the weekend!  What on earth did teachers do before blogging and Pinterest......I would've been lost!!!

I'm also linking up with Jodi at Fun in First Grade for my favorite Back to School activity!!  I just love the beginning of the school year!  All the excitement, anticipation, and newness just gets me all giddy!!  Like most teachers I have a ton of favorite activities, but I will limit it to one.

For the past 5 years I have been doing a Get-To-Know-You Snowball fight.  I've seen some things about it on Pinterest recently, but I originally saw the idea in an issue of Instructor magazine.  I give each kiddo a sheet of notebook paper.  They are to list three things about themselves that we might not know.  I tell them that the key to this activity is to make their three things a little tricky for us to guess, but not so hard that their three things could belong to just any ol' body in the classroom.  Once we've all written down our three things we crumple up our paper and the real fun begins!  I give them a couple of minutes to throw their "snowballs" around the room, at each other, at me......it's hilarious.

  This was my very first year of teaching (6th grade that year) and my very first attempt at the snowball fight.  I sure do miss these little peeps.

 I think I love this part the best because every one is so tense on that first day of school....trying to be good, trying to make the right impression, not sure how to act.....and this activity allows us to all let our hair down and have fun!  When the the snowball fight ends each person picks up the snowball closest to them, and we take turns reading them aloud. We all try to guess who the paper belongs too.  This part can get pretty silly.....I've even had kids forget what they wrote and not recognize when someone is reading their three things.....ahh 4th graders, don't you just love them!

Only 2 Mondays left....

Can you believe it....I only have 2 Mondays of freedom left before school starts!!  There is a chance we will be able to get into our new classrooms next Friday, which means I will be spending the 6 days between then and our official day back (August 16th) putting my room together!  I'm so thankful that I have been working little by little on school projects this summer.  I have a good feeling that this school year is going to have a smooth take off!!

In order to ensure that I stick to my goals and avoid some turbulance for the upcoming year I am linking up with Amanda at Teaching Maddeness for her New {School}Year Resolutions.  Let's hope I stick to these a little better than the resolutions I made back in January (what were those again?????)!

Resolution #1:  Don't fret the small stuff.  For those of you that know me really well, you know I tend to freak out and panic over the silliest things.  This year I really want to offer a sense of calm to my students.  I want our classroom to be a place we can make mistakes and be okay with that.  I also want to be the best mom I when I get home, and not the crazy-chicken-running-around-with-her-head-cut-off that I normally am.  To help with this resolution I've started doing Yoga a few times a week. It's amazing what a morning walk or morning yoga can do for you attitude the rest of the day!!!
 

Resolution #2: Deliver more positive feedback to my students.  I really want to focus on the positive this school year!  I want to notice the wonderful things my students do every day and not just address poor choices/behavior.  I even made a Happy Bucket to help us all with the spirit of kindness and generosity!!

Resolution #3: Take more classroom pictures!!!  Amanda has this as the first resolution on her blog, and when I saw it I was so relieved to know I'm not the only one who constantly forgets to get snapshots of the fun things going down in my classroom.  I am hoping to use more pics in my blog posts this year as well!!

Resolution #4: Talk less!!  This applies to so many areas of my life.....I can't even begin to list them all.  High on the list though are talk less on teacher work days and after school.  I am horrible at distracting myself with conversations and then regretting it at the end of the day when I've accomplished nothing.  It also applies to my teaching.  I feel like I tell more than I show, and that I talk more than I allow my students to share what they know.  Finally it applies to my own little peeps at home.  I want to talk less and listen more!!!

That's it!  I want to keep it at four because it seems more manageable and with everything that goes on in a school day it will be a miracle if I can remember these in a few weeks!

Teacher Tuesday....a bit late, and a Linky Party!

After two weeks of travel we are finally home to stay.....well, Katie and I are.....Jake is headed to Canada with his dad on Monday.  We have had the BEST summer and are so thankful to our family for making our vacations so much fun!!  All this relaxing summer vacation stuff has given me time to think about my back-to-school-to-do-list, and it's a long one!  Thanks to Tara at Fourth Grade Frolics I've been able to get lots of stuff done on her Monday Made It!

I put this classroom promise together last week when we were home for two days between vacations.  I saw it on Lori's blog Teaching with Love and Laughter and fell in love!  I can't wait to hang it in a prominent space in my classroom and refer to it daily. 

It will look so much nicer on the light colored walls in my new classroom!

And my very favorite one of all....

5. Label all of the name tags, classroom supplies, etc. with student's names
6. Lesson plans for the first month of school
7. Year long plan
8. Create a No Name plaque for papers
9. Print labels for library books (so they can be organized by genre)
10. Buy bookcases for desk group organization
11. Print back-to-school packets for Open House night
12. Revamp powerpoint for Parent Orientation Night
13. Make a schedule
14. Make a sub binder
15. photocopy, photocopy, photocopy
16. laminate, laminate, laminate
17. Make business card magnets with my contact information for parents to take home
18.  Make a teacher tool box
19. Re-do my brain break sticks
20. Buy fabric and boarder for bulletin boards.
I could go on, but 20 seems like more than enough for now!

The list is almost as overwhelming at home.....
1. Enroll in my masters course and follow up with the University about financial aide (I have a feeling this one will take a while)
2. Enroll the kids in school and buy school supplies
3. Get auto insurance for Jake, buy his birthday gift, and a few other things that can't be mentioned on the ol' blog for fear that he reads it....they are a big 16th birthday surprise!!!
4. Jakes' sports physical
5. Dentist appointments for all of us
6. Urology follow up appointment for Katie
7. Get the house good and clean before August 21st.
8. Make more hand cream (gotta have enough to last until Christmas break)
9. Prep some crockpot freezer meals for the school year.
10. Get the new Little Britches signs printed and help Sarah with any prep work!

Okay, stopping there because a little bit of panic just set in!!

First up I'm linking with Learning With Mrs. Parker.  She has the most adorable classroom, and in all honesty I can't really participate in this party.  My building is being renovated and we are not allowed anywhere near it!  But, I simply cannot wait until we can get in there and start putting together our classrooms.  I have been crafting my little fingers to the bone this summer to make all kinds of adorable, color themed things for my new space.  I promise a full blog post complete with far too many pictures when I finally get it finished.....and let's hope that's well before August 21st.....the first day of school!!!!  In the mean time please check out my Teacher Tuesday posts to see all the fun things I've made for the coming school year!

Second I'm linking up with Analia at Ingles 360.  What does a typical Monday look like in my life....I go with a school Monday because the summer Mondays are so fabulous you wouldn't believe them anyway!


5:30 a.m. Alarm goes off and I slowly, very slowly crawl out of bed and then battle with my sleep deprived brain about working out.  On Monday's my conscious usually wins and I get a 30 minute workout in on the treadmill.
6:00 a.m. A GIANT cup of coffee, some time checking email, visiting blog land, and connecting on Facebook.
6:30 a.m. Wake the teenager who has to be to school be fore the rest of us, then shower.....ahh, now I'm awake!
6:50 a.m. This time really wake the teenager who "accidentally" fell back to sleep.
7:00 a.m. Wake the 6th grade.....she only take one try.
7:05 a.m. Hand the teenager some breakfast as he heads out the door to school
7:10 a.m. Breakfast with the 6th grader who has spent 10 minutes loving the Bassett Hound and has done nothing to prepare for school.
7:35 a.m. Off to school!  I'm fortunate to teach in the school school where my daughter attends.....this will be our last year together (it's killing me).
7:45-8:30: Review lesson plans, make copies, visit with colleagues about their weekend, and make sure we are all ready for the week!
8:35 a.m. Students arrive
The rest of this is based on last year's schedule.  We will have 3 sections of 4th grade this year so I'm not sure what our schedule will look like.
8:45 a.m.: First Language Art block
10:15 a.m.: Brain Break and Social Studies block
10:45 a.m.: Math Enrichment (plan time for me :)
11:15 a.m.: Intro spelling for the week and a game
11:50 a.m.-12:32 p.m.: Run home, let the dog out and scarf down a few leftovers
12:32-1:00 p.m.: Pick up my kiddos from the lunchroom, restroom, drinks, Read Aloud, students finish their morning work and a few go to the library
1:00 p.m. Second Language Arts block
2:30 p.m.: Brain Break and Second Social Studies block
3:00 p.m.: Fill out planners, review learning from the day, pack up, recess
3:40 p.m. dismiss
3:45 p.m.: Much needed caffeine and a review of the days lessons, some grading, change the schedule on the board, make necessary copies, phone calls, or appointments, clean up anything my little housekeepers missed, and if all goes well.....out the door at 5pm!
5:00-10:00 p.m.  If you have kids you know what the rest of this schedule looks like....utter chaos!!

My third link up is with Stephanie at Teaching in Room 6 Classroom Management.....I wish I was better at this one!  We use a monitary system in our 4th grade.  Each teacher (there are three of us this year) have different type of currency (mine are called Denney Dollars) and students earn them for various things.  For example if they bring their planner signed each morning they earn one, if they bring their Friday Folder signed on Monday mornings they hear 2, if they re following directions, offer to help a friend, hold a door for a teacher, etc. they earn more.  They can also recocgnize anothers good deeds and write me a note about them.  I then award the good deed and the person who noticed it.  Last year I started awarding them a Denney Dollar each time found one of the weeks vocabulary words in the Read to Self book and shared it with me......they LOVED this one!

At the end of each quarter we have an auction and they use their Denney Dollars to purchase things.  Each student can bring one item (or several items packaged as one) to the auction.  The cost of the items cannot exceed $5 (baked goods and sodas are a HUGE hit).  The students come to the front of the room to showcase their item and then I get to play the auctioneer.  I cannot even put into words how much they LOVE these auctions!!

There you have it, simple, but for the most part effective.....I can't wait to read what others are doing!!

 Fourth....Teaching with Courage at Finding JOY in 6th grade.  Wow, talk about inspirational....read some of these posts and you will be blow away!  Teachers really are courageous people!

My two courageous teaching moments (I promise to make them short!)

1. My third year of teaching has been my roughest year of teaching thus far.  I had a VERY challenging class.  Angry is the best word I can use the describe several of the boys in my room that year.....it was harder than I ever dreamed.  4th graders aren't as big as 6th graders, but some of them come close, and that can be dangerous.  On top of the anger there was foul language, tipping over of desks, throwing chairs, destroying property, hitting (me and others), spitting, and just all around HORRIBLE behavior.  I will admit.....I spent alot of time that year researching other careers.  I just didn't think I could do this for the long haul.  To make matters worse my teacher partner was diagnosed with cancer.  She missed almost the entire second semester so it was me with a sub and this extremely challenging group of 4th graders.  I felt like I was living on a deserted island, but there was no way I was going to complain or whine.....my partner was fighting for her life....what the heck did I have to complain about.  Fast forward to May.....I survived, I made it, I finished, and 3 years later I still love teaching and wouldn't do anything else.  I will tell you that my partner passed away in April of 2011.  We departmentalize so all of the 4th graders had her as their teacher......I've NEVER done anything harder than telling a classroom full of 9 and 10 year olds that their beloved teacher had passed away.....and then went on to teach, keeping my own personal grieving under wraps all day.  My daughter was in that class that year, and it was all I could do to pull myself together after telling her to then turn around and tell my students.......that was a very challenging two years that required LOTS of courage!!!
